The Christmas Song (What Christmas is All About)

We wanted to bring you this re-mix and master of our Christmas song, which was the first song we wrote for 20schemes music that is suitable for congregational singing.

Next week we’ll release a new version of Come Thou Long Expected Jesus, with a new verse written by Pete Stewart from Hope Community Church Barlanark.

We’re releasing both of these songs in the hope that they might serve your local church this Christmas. Both songs work congregationally and have been written to try and clarify the centrality of the gospel—which is the very heart of the Christmas story—a vital and wonderful truth we want to sing about amidst the madness, emptiness, and hopelessness familiar to so many in our schemes at this time of year.

For God so loved this broken world

With all its sadness, all its pain

He sent His one and only Son

To take our guilt and bear our shame

So long ago in Bethlehem

Angels appeared to working men

“Joy to the world from heav’n above”

Proclaimed the birth of Christ the King

And that’s what Christmas is all about

This newborn baby in the hay

Is Jesus Christ and He has come to us

To drive the darkness far away

This child would crush the serpent’s head

And grow to conquer sin and death

This Christ would die in agony

Then rise in power and victory

And that’s what Christmas is all about

The Son of God became a man

To live a sinless life we couldn’t live

To die the death that we deserve

“All glory to the Lord on high!”

Sang angel choirs which filled the sky

There’s now no need to be afraid

When you believe in Jesus’ name

And that’s what Christmas is all about

God’s great compassion for the lost

When we were powerless to save ourselves

God sent His own beloved Son
