God Looked Down

God Looked Down was written by Benny Anderson, who grew up in the Craigmillar/Niddrie area in Edinburgh, Scotland. He wrote this song to praise God who ‘looked down’—sending His only Son into the world in order that guilty sinners might be forgiven and set free.

LYRICS

VERSE 1

God looked down from high above

And saw how we betrayed His love

Adam’s shame and Eve’s great pain

It’s only just begun

“Sin has took its grip on them

I’ll have to send my Son”

VERSE 2

God looked down on sinful ground

To pierce our hardened hearts.

Ashamed are we He wants to set free

And tore our world apart

Jesus came and took the blame

He had to send His Son

CHORUS

Hallelujah, Hallelujah,

Jesus came to set men free

Hallelujah, Hallelujah,

Jesus Died, He died for me.

VERSE 3

So now we walk that narrow path

With Jesus, free of wrath

Hard fixed eyes on the King

He took my soul, my life, my all

I won’t complain ‘cause He took the blame

I’m glad he sent His Son.

CHORUS

Hallelujah, Hallelujah,

Jesus came to set men free

Hallelujah, Hallelujah,

Jesus Died, He died for me.

VERSE 4

I’m getting close to my reward

To see Him face to face

Homeward bound, that crown I see

Is what’s in store for me

No eye has seen, nor mind conceived

Eternity for me

Jesus came and He took the blame

And me He did receive.

CHORUS

Hallelujah, Hallelujah,

Jesus came to set men free

Hallelujah, Hallelujah,

Jesus Died, He died for me.
