‘Wake Up’ (COVID–19 & the Gospel)

These past few weeks have seen people isolating themselves around the world in a way that hasn’t been seen before. The number of people infected by COVID-19 is growing rapidly, as is the death toll. Economies are crumbling and world powers are being exposed as powerless in the wake of a virus that has brought large parts of this world to its knees.

In light of this, I have written this new song. It’s not congregational; in fact it’s a song that is for unbelievers as much as it is for believers. I hope it will serve you as a lyric video to share with your family, friends, and neighbours on your social media, especially while much of our usual daily evangelism is limited.

Christ is Lord, and while this coronavirus spreads across the globe, He is in complete control. I pray this song serves to wake you up to the true wonder of what Christ has done for us, and I pray that it also serves to wake up your loved ones, those who are still lost, to see Christ and to turn to Him in repentance and faith.

I hope you and your families keep safe and keep looking up!

Editor’s Note: Please feel free to use this video for livestreaming online with your church if that would serve you.

As this virus takes its toll, Christ is Lord

We were never in control, Christ is Lord

Our indifference and pride He has seen

And He knows what the outcome should have been

Yet He cried “Father forgive them for they know not what they do”

We have crucified the King, Christ our Lord

Worshipped idols, turned from Him, precious Lord

See the soldiers spit in His face

As He carries the cross in our place

Hear Him cry: “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.”

Wake up, wake up, wake up, see Jesus

Look up, look up, see the Lamb, the Lamb who was slain

Cry out, for mercy, find full forgiveness

Know the peace that is found, found in His name.

“He was despised and rejected by men,
a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;
and as one from whom men hide their faces
he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his wounds we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all . . .

Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant,
    make many to be accounted righteous,
    and he shall bear their iniquities.” (Is. 53:3–6;11)

Mighty, victorious! On the third day Jesus arose!

The grave is defeated, Where O death! Where is your sting?

As this virus takes its toll, Christ is King

He is in complete control, trust in Him.
